The days of aluminuim plates and rubber blankets of the offset printing seem to have faded fast with the increased advancement of digital printing. Digital printing is the best choice when the quantity is lesser, as the costs are comparatively lower to that of the offset printing. Because of the low content setup costs and transaction costs, the days when digital printing was used only to extend the life of a title in the long tail are gone. Digital printing is also the most convenient when additional copies need to be produced in a short notice economically.
The best advantage of the digital printing, however, comes in the form of variable data capacity. When each copy that has to be printed needs to have a unique code, name or address, it can be accomplished with a digital printer and it can never be done with an offset printer. The last decade has seen numerous technological advancements in short-run digital printing (SRDP) and print-on-demand (POD) methods, regarding print quality, format, speed and workflow. POD is the best when it is fully automated where the orders received by the distributors or publishers are directly passed on to the printing systems.
SRDP is the most optimal choice when the quantity of the requirements and the sales forecast is uncertain. Toner and ink- jet technologies are being used widely by many publishers, printers and for various products, as these technologies have made inventory management a whole lot easier. A new trend in publishing comes by printing the original copies using offset print technology in a small quantity, and later printing additional copies digitally. This has helped reduce inventory risks and limit the expenditure much more. Therefore, with the ability to print smaller quantities more economically, customize content, and fulfill the demands throughout the printing process, digital printing remains unbeatable.
